Kisumu's Climate at a Glance
Kisumu has a tropical savanna climate moderated by its position on the shore of Lake Victoria. The city sits just a few kilometres south of the equator at an altitude of about 1,131 metres, which keeps temperatures relatively pleasant year-round — typically between 17°C and 32°C. Kisumu has two distinct dry seasons and two rainy seasons, which dictate the best times to visit.
The Best Time to Visit Kisumu
June to September (Main Dry Season) — This is the best time to visit Kisumu for most travellers. Sunny, dry weather makes sightseeing comfortable, roads to out-of-town attractions are in good condition, and wildlife viewing at the Impala Sanctuary and Ndere Island is at its best. Lake Victoria boat trips run reliably in calm conditions. This period also coincides with Kenya's peak tourist season nationally, so hotel prices may be slightly higher, particularly at weekends.
January to February (Short Dry Season) — The second-best window for visiting. Warm, dry weather and fewer tourists than the main season. Hotel rates tend to be lower than the June–September peak, making this a good value option for those with flexibility. Excellent birdwatching around the lake during this period.
When to Avoid
March to May (Long Rains) — Kisumu's wettest months. The long rains can be heavy and persistent, making some roads difficult and outdoor activities less enjoyable. That said, the countryside is at its greenest and most beautiful, and those who don't mind occasional showers will find a more atmospheric and less visited city. Budget accommodation and flight prices are generally lower during this period.
October to December (Short Rains) — A shorter, lighter rainy season. Travel is generally still possible but afternoons often bring rain. The Christmas and New Year period sees a significant uptick in domestic tourism and prices, particularly around Christmas week.
