About Kisumu
Kisumu is the capital of Kisumu County and Kenya's third-largest city, located on the northeastern shore of Lake Victoria in Western Kenya. With a population of around 500,000, it is a fast-growing city with a distinct identity rooted in the culture of the Luo people. The word Kisumu itself comes from a Luo word meaning "market" or "trading place," reflecting the city's long history as a commercial hub for the Lake Victoria basin.
Founded by the British as "Port Florence" in 1901 as the terminus of the Uganda Railway, Kisumu developed rapidly as a trading port before Kenya's independence and has reinvented itself in recent decades as both a commercial gateway to Uganda and Tanzania and a tourism destination in its own right.
Getting Around Kisumu
Kisumu is a compact city and most of the main attractions are within 20 minutes of the town centre. The most common ways to get around are:
- Boda boda (motorcycle taxis): The most common and fastest option for short trips. Agree on a price before you get on โ a typical in-city trip costs Ksh 50 to Ksh 150.
- Tuk-tuks: Three-wheeled auto-rickshaws that are good for slightly longer trips around town. Typically Ksh 100 to Ksh 300 per ride.
- Uber and Bolt: Both apps work well in Kisumu and are generally cheaper than negotiating with individual taxis. Highly recommended for airport transfers.
- Matatus: Shared minibuses on fixed routes throughout the city. Very cheap (from Ksh 30) but can be confusing for first-time visitors.
Food and Drink in Kisumu
Kisumu has a distinctive food culture shaped by its Luo heritage and proximity to Lake Victoria. Fresh fish โ particularly tilapia and Nile perch โ is the defining dish of the region, typically served fried with ugali, sukuma wiki, and kachumbari. Dunga Beach is the best place in the city to eat lakeside, with numerous spots serving fish grilled over charcoal just metres from the water.
For more varied dining, the town centre has several restaurants serving Indian, Ethiopian, and international cuisine. Ciala Resort and Sunset Hotel both have good in-house restaurants for a more comfortable dining experience.
