About Kisumu International Airport
Kisumu International Airport (IATA: KIS) is a modern, compact airport located approximately 3km west of Kisumu's town centre. It handles both domestic routes and limited regional international services. The airport underwent a significant renovation and expansion in the 2010s and now has a modern terminal building with good facilities, including a café, a small duty-free shop, and comfortable seating areas.
The airport is small and easy to navigate — domestic arrivals and departures are straightforward and the short distances within the terminal mean you'll rarely need more than 20 minutes from landing to exiting the arrivals hall.
Transport from Kisumu Airport to Town
Uber and Bolt: Both apps operate in Kisumu and can be picked up from the airport car park. This is the most convenient and often the most affordable option. A trip to Kisumu town centre typically costs Ksh 300 to Ksh 600 and takes about 10 minutes. Reliable Wi-Fi is not available at the airport so download the app and have your destination saved before you land.
Licensed taxis: Available immediately outside the arrivals exit. Rates are negotiated rather than metered — agree on a price before getting in. A trip to Kisumu CBD should cost between Ksh 500 and Ksh 1,000 depending on your exact destination. To Milimani (where Ciala Resort is located) expect to pay around Ksh 700 to Ksh 1,200.
Hotel transfers: Most hotels in Kisumu, including Ciala Resort, Sunset Hotel, and The Vic, offer airport pickup on request when you book. Confirm this in advance when making your reservation.
Matatus and boda bodas: These are available on the road outside the airport but are not recommended for arrival with luggage. Fine for the return journey to the airport if you're travelling light and comfortable with Kisumu's local transport.

Check-in and Departure Tips
For domestic flights, arrive at least 45 minutes before your scheduled departure. Safarilink recommends arriving 60 minutes before departure as their check-in closes 30 minutes before the flight — they are strict about this. For Kenya Airways and Jambojet, arrive at least 60 minutes before departure. Security at Kisumu Airport is thorough but moves quickly, and queues are rarely long.
